Radar: Agreement to blow away wind power barriers

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been reached between BERR (Dept for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform), the MoD (Ministry of Defence), the CAA (Civil Aviation Autority), NATS (National Air Traffic Service) and the BWEA (British Wind Energy Association).

The aviation groups and the MoD object to wind turbines because of alleged inteference with radar systems. However, this agreement means that all groups will work to explore technical solutions. They will also try to shorten pre-planning consultation times and reduce the number of speculative consultations.

Business Secretary John Hutton said that this 'represents real progress towards remving a barrier to the expansion of wind power, while ensuring air safety and national security'.
