Business Secretary John Hutton has announced a Government consultation on the renewable energy strategy. The government expects wind (onshore and offshore) and biomass to be the key growth areas. The BWEA is naturally enthusiastic, saying that 'this could be a route map for a green energy revolution'.
By 2013 over 8.6GW of wind installations should be operational, overtaking the installed nuclear capacity. Offshore wind farms may provide 20GW by 2020. This amount of production would also have a positive effect on the labour market, with as many as 160,000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector.
