We are delighted to announce that the North Walsham Community Wind Farm project has moved forward and we can now appeal for members/share holders.
There has been a long delay since our public meeting in April 2007. The MOD needed to upgrade their equipment at the Trimingham Radar station. This has now been resolved and they have agreed to our application for planning permission.
Unity Wind Limited, has been set up as a not-for-profit Industrial & Provident Society (No 30391R) to run the project. Anyone who wants to support the project can become a member for as little as £1, which buys one share and gives equal voting rights with all other members.
As a community project, Unity Wind Limited will keep the profits from the turbines in the area, not just by the returns paid to investors, but also by supporting other local energy saving and renewable energy projects through a special fund.
We hope many local people will join and help us raise some of the money for surveys needed for our planning application. Until we have gained planning permission there is still some uncertainty that we can use the first site we selected. So we are asking people at this stage not to invest more than they can afford to lose. Small amounts will be very welcome.
Looking to the future, once we have gained planning permission people may choose to increase their investment as a local wind farm may well prove a safer investment than many others in today’s economic climate.
We have already had one grant of £15,000 from Eeda, which enabled us to secure the site with option and lease agreements, and pay for a survey of grid connections. Match funding from local investors will help with future grant applications.
We have also been given a met mast, worth about £25,000, by the Olympic Village. This will measure wind speeds to prove that turbines on the site would be profitable. We have recently applied for planning permission for this mast and expect to install it in a few weeks time.
