If you have been following the North Walsham community wind project from the start then you will recall that three turbines were in the initial proposal. This was later reduced to two (larger) turbines when one location became unavailable. We are now deciding whether to proceed with the two-turbine solution, or to opt for a single 3MW wind turbine, the largest generation capacity that has been installed on-shore in the UK.
A single, large turbine would be cheaper to commission and may bring with it significant savings in grid connection. However, two smaller 2.3MW turbines would generate significantly more electricity - and help even more to cut global carbon emissions.
Both the 2.3MW and the 3MW Enercon units have a 78m hub height and blade sweep of 82m. The turbine is gearless, which makes it extremely quiet - especially close up! You can read more about the turbine on the Enercon website: E82 - High Yield in 3MW Category.
